MLA Partner Schools (formerly called Mentor LA ) is a nonprofit organization working to improve schools and empower neighborhoods in some of the most disenfranchised communities in Los Angeles. MLA works to create high performing urban schools that offer a college preparatory education to every child in the surrounding neighborhood. MLA's first Partner School, West Adams Prep, opened in September 2007 to serve 2200 students, setting a new standard for public schools and anchoring a strategic revitalization of the surrounding neighborhood. At Manual Arts High School , MLA has formed a partnership with WestEd, a non-profit research, development, and service agency that works with schools, families, and communities to promote excellence, achieve equity, and improve learning for children, youth and adults. WestEd has extensive expertise in comprehensive school reform, early childhood and youth development, curriculum and instruction, community building, educational evaluation, and policy analysis. Researchers at WestEd have developed a school turnaround strategy based on a “tipping point” theory of change.
